Denmark and the African Union Peace Fund Strengthen Partnership to Advance Sustainable Peace Financing in Africa

The AU Peace Fund and the Government of Denmark convened a high-level meeting to officially mark the launch of Denmark’s support to the African Union Peace Fund, reinforcing a shared commitment to advancing peace, security, and stability across Africa through sustainable and African-led financing mechanisms.

The meeting brought together ambassadors, development partners, representatives of international institutions, and senior officials to discuss the strategic importance of strengthening the Peace Fund as a cornerstone of Africa’s peace and security architecture.

Ms. Dagmawit Moges, the Director of the African Union Peace Fund Secretariat, welcomed participants and emphasized that the Peace Fund is not solely governed by African Union member states, but is supported by a strong governance structure that includes international partners in the Board of Trustees and the Independent Evaluation Group.

The Director also highlighted that since its revitalization in 2018, the Peace Fund has made significant progress both financially and institutionally. As of February 2026, the Fund had accumulated over USD 400 million in balance after disbursing USD 39 million over the past two and a half years to support critical peace-related interventions across the continent.

A major highlight of the meeting was the formal launching of Denmark’s new support to the Peace Fund, which will strengthen the capacity of the Peace Fund Secretariat to access innovative financing mechanisms for addressing peace-related activities across the continent.

H.E. Ambassador Sune Krogstrup of Denmark described the initiative as a strategic effort to strengthen the institutional foundations of the Peace Fund and facilitate future engagement with development partners. He emphasized that ODA eligibility is not an objective in itself, but rather a tool to support sustainable financing for peace and reinforce African ownership of peace and security solutions. In line with this, the Government of Denmark has provided DKK 10 million to support these initiatives.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for extensive dialogue with diplomatic missions and development partners. Discussions focused on the progress of the African Union Peace Fund operations and the new initiative supported by the Government of Denmark to the Peace Fund.

The Government of Denmark becomes the first country to provide direct government support to the African Union Peace Fund outside of the traditional endowment structure, setting an important precedent for future partnerships.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the collective commitment to strengthen the Peace Fund as a credible, transparent, and sustainable instrument for financing African-led peace initiatives. Both sides expressed confidence that the Denmark partnership would inspire additional partners to join the effort and scale up support for peace, security, and prosperity across the continent.

As the African Union accelerates implementation of its peace and security agenda, this collaboration stands as a strong contribution toward the aspirations of Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.
