The Chairperson of the African Union Commission condemns the attempted coup d’État in the Republic of Benin

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, firmly condemns the attempted coup d’État that occurred in the Republic of Benin. He reiterates the African Union’s clear and unequivocal rejection of any unconstitutional change of government, in accordance with the Constitutive Act of the African Union, the 2000 Lomé Declaration, and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.

The Chairperson of the Commission expresses the African Union’s solidarity with the Government and people of Benin during these difficult circumstances. He underscores the imperative of preserving constitutional order, safeguarding national stability, and protecting democratic institutions.

The African Union reaffirms its readiness to accompany the Republic of Benin — in close coordination with ECOWAS — in its efforts to preserve national cohesion, peace and security, and to ensure a swift return to full normalcy.
