What: The African Union Commission will convene the 27th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union Dedicated to Financing the Union.

When: The Extraordinary Session will be held on13 November 2026.

Why: The financing of the African Union remains a central component of the ongoing institutional reform process aimed at strengthening the Union’s financial independence, accountability and capacity to implement its continental priorities. In this regard, H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and African Union Champion for Institutional Reform, has been leading efforts to advance reforms aimed at strengthening the Union’s financial sustainability, reducing dependence on external financing and ensuring predictable funding for its programmes and peace support operations.

At its 38^th Ordinary Session held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 15^th to 16^th February 2025, the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union adopted Decision Assembly/AU/Dec.920(XXXVIII), which, inter alia, requested the Executive Council to convene an Extraordinary Session bringing together Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Ministers of Finance of Member States to consider measures to strengthen the financing of the Union and the Peace Fund.

Subsequently, at its 39^th Ordinary Session held in Addis Ababa from 14^th to 15^th February 2026, the Assembly adopted Decision Assembly/AU/Dec.967(XXXIX), reiterating the decision to convene the Extraordinary Session no later than November 2026.

Pursuant to these Decisions, the Government of the Republic of Ghana, in collaboration with the African Union Commission, will host the 27^th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union Dedicated to Financing the Union, on 13th November 2026, in Accra, Ghana.
